About the database

This database is the culmination of my two research projects involving data mining and analysis of texts. In my previous project, "Tracing the Sources of the Kāśikāvṛtti," I analyzed and compared passages from the Mahābhāṣya and the Kāśikāvr̥tti. In my ongoing project, I am expanding my research to include texts from various Sanskrit grammatical traditions, such as Kātantra, Cāndra, Jainendra, and Sārasvata. I am comparing the arguments made by the sūtra commentators with those articulated in Pāṇinian commentaries. The data shown here is a small portion of a larger database, specifically focusing on sūtras. In upcoming stages, additional data gathered from the commentaries and relevant analysis will be integrated.

The pages display Sanskrit grammatical sūtras along with a list of their related sūtras or texts from other grammatical systems. The relation between the sūtras is decided according to the grammatical operations, the specific forms, or the view they address. Initially, the data was based on the information available in the printed books (references below). However, I have made many additions and corrections. The data concerns only the sūtras and does not consider the commentators arguments. In future stages, I will add information from the commentaries.

The post-Pāṇinian grammatical sūtras are based on Pāṇini’s sūtras and on earlier Pāṇinian commentaries. Each author addresses the grammatical instances differently. Sometimes the author combines several of Pāṇini’s sūtras into one, while at other times, he cites a few sūtras instead of one Pāṇini’s sūtras. Therefore, in many occasions, a sūtra does not precisely correspond to the sūtra of another grammatical system. In some places, I present all the sūtras that are related to the queried sūtra. Each page displays the related sūtras or texts for the queried sūtra. In addition, the pages include the information regarding each of the listed sūtras with links to their own dedicated pages, allowing users to access all related information.

Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī

I present some of Pāṇini’s sūtras with the version likely known to Kātyāyana and Patañjali while the Kāśikāvr̥tti version is in square brackets.

Kātantra-vyākaraṇa

The sūtrapāṭha of the Kātantra-vyākaraṇa is based on Dwivedi’s edition. A few sūtras contain in square brackets also the version of the sūtra in Eggeling’s edition.

Cāndra-vyākaraṇa

The sūtrapāṭha of the Cāndra-vyākaraṇa is based on Chatterji’s edition.

Jainendra-vyākaraṇa

The version of the sūtrapāṭha of the Jainendra-vyākaraṇa is based on the sūtras given in Abhayanandi’s Māhavr̥tti. In future stages, I will add the version according to Śabdārṇavacandrikā of Somadevasūri. Sūtras enclosed in square brackets indicate those that the commentary skips. Some sūtras include text within square brackets, representing a potential corrected version of the sūtra.

Sārasvata-vyākaraṇa

A reliable edition of the sūtras of Sārasvata-vyākaraṇa is unavailable. The sūtrapāṭha given here is based on both printed editions of the Sarasvatīkaṇṭhābharaṇa, the edition of T. R. Chintamani and edition of Sāmbaśiva Śāstrī which includes the commentary of Nārāyaṇadaṇḍanātha. Each edition has different readings for many sūtras. They also differ with respect to the numbering of the sūtras, with Sāmbaśiva Śāstrī occasionally skipping numbers or presenting a sūtra without one. The list of the Sārasvata sūtras given here includes both the numbers from each edition. The first is the number from Śāstrī edition and the second in brackets is of Chintamani’s edition. ‘X’ at the end of the number indicates that the edition does not have sūtra. In many occasions, the missing sūtra is given as a part of the previous or the following sūtra. When there are two versions of the sūtra, the Chintamani’s version is placed in square brackets. I have also compared the sūtras with Shri Narayan Prasad’s alternative version based on his own research on the Sārasvata-vyākaraṇa. His list is available at ashtadhyayi.com.

Kātyāyana’s vārttikas

The text of Kātyāyana’s vārttikas, Patañjali’s Bhāṣya and the Kāśikāvr̥tti is the digital edition of George Cardona, Elliot Stern and Peter Scharf. The text given here without sandhi.
Most of the vārttikas presented here propose additions to Pāṇini’s sūtras. In future stages, I will add various types of vārttikas, such as sūtra split and term rejections, each organized into specific sections based on their proposals.
The vārttikas include references to location in Kielhorn (K.) and Rohtak (R.) editions of the Mahābhāṣya. Text within square brackets represents an alternate reading as presented in the Rohtak edition.

Patañjali’s Bhāṣya

I do not present the complete discussion from Patañjali’s Bhāṣya on the sūtra. My aim is to highlight the segment of the text that the sūtra author may have followed when formulating his sūtra. As in the case of Kātyāyana’s vārttikas, most of the Bhāṣya’s segments presented here proposes additions. In future stages, I will add other type of Patañjali’s proposals.

Kāśikāvr̥tti

The segments from the Kāśikāvr̥tti are mostly Vāmana and Jayāditya’s additional remarks that are not present in Patañjali’s Mahābhāṣya. These comments may have originated in earlier Pāṇinian texts that have been lost. The segments include references to the pages of the Osmania edition.
